(I heard an interesting commentary on the radio this morning about the craziness of a “10% across the board” cut. If you were having problems with your personal or family cash flow, is that how you would handle it? Doubtful.)

Of course not. I would cut the wife’s budget by 20% and the kids by 5% and then wait a month before buying that 300 mm f2.8 lens. In difficult times, we all have to make sacrifices.

Oh man. I just heard today, David Cay Johnston interviewed about his new book, Free Lunch. I guess I understand how we pay all this money out in taxes and why everything is being cut. In all to many communities, big box stores charge sales tax when you go in to buy this or that. And you probably expect that sales tax is being sent back to local and state governments to pay for police and fire deparments and schools and libraries and parks and all the things that we expect government to provide. But no. The stores get to keep that sales tax so they can pay for the stores at tax payer expense. And its perfectly legal. They “negotiate” that deal with the politicians who think they are getting such a deal bringing in these big box stores. Just great. Just great.
